You Are Already Paying For “Sick Leave”…Is Paid “Family Leave” Next?

Yes, you read the headline right…paid family leave for employees is in the works in New York.  The good news is that it is not law...yet.  On March 7, 2014, the bill providing for paid "family medical leave" was ratified by the New York State Assembly.  As Cindy Schmitt Minniti explained in much detail, if passed by the New York State Senate, you would have to: (a) pay employees for up to 12 weeks if they take time off for their family; (b) you will have to get insurance to cover this new wage right; and (c) you employers must give employees the same or similar job back when they return.   New York State Republican Senate is not keen on passing this law.  However, things could change after the 2014 state elections. And with a Democratic governor, New York could join California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island as the fourth sate to offer paid family leave.  I think it’s time for you to start mentally preparing for the worst.
