About six weeks ago, I asked you if you would join Google, Apple Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter and all the other tech giants in their push to save “net neutrality” – i.e. to prevent large corporations with lots of money to have an inherent advantage over small business owners like you and me on the internet.
Before I became a business owner, I took no interest in this issue. That is because it is a bit dry and many of us just can’t see how this will affect us in our personal lives. Even as a small business owner, I knew intellectually that this will affect the ability of ALL of our businesses to thrive and grow, but somehow it still had not aroused my passions.
That is, until I saw John Oliver’s clip on net neutrality. Not only did he explain (in simple relatable terms) how this will affect us small business owners, he called BS on one cable company’s claim that instead of slow and fast internet speeds, the new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) proposals will give us fast and hyper-speed options! Yeah right! But most important of all, he mobilized the public to get involved and express their views on the proposals to the FCC directly. At last count, his efforts led to over 70K comments that literally crashed the FCC website.
Who knows if this will have any effect on the final outcome... but Mr. Oliver’s efforts to prevent this issue from being swept under the rug is exactly what we need right now.
